Happy New Year, guys!
Here's what Susan did on the first day of the new year:
12.11.2016
Susan is well aware she lied in her last post when she said she'd see you tomorrow. Not only did she not see you tomorrow, she abandoned her voluntary commitment to write a BLAHg post every day then she took the month off.
During this time period Susan got different health insurance, celebrated Thanksgiving with all her cousins, watched a bunch of episodes of Cops, fell in love with a red vintage ice bucket, cleaned her house for a party, spent money on car repairs and plane tickets, observed a fella with a sack lunch walking along the side of the road accompanied by a swan, and decorated for Christmas by plugging in her Little Light Up Santa.
As if all that weren't enough, she commemorated her beloved Cousin Lisa's second birthday without her, followed the next day by the husband's second anniversary in Heaven, or wherever he actually is.
Susan caught herself referring to something that occurred around the time the husband died as having happened last year. That sh*t was two years ago, not one. Two years.
Yesterday Susan saw someone with her husband's hair; thick, blinding white, combed straight back covering a square head. She always thought the husband's head was shaped like a Rock-Em Sock-Em robot. This dude didn't look like the husband, only his hair did, and she watched him until he disappeared from her view. She lapped up that few seconds of a long gone familiarity like a dog lapping water from a pothole.
A few days earlier the song that played over Susan's clock radio came on (click HERE for a reminder) and she immediately started crying. Her brain recognized that song in like two notes and the response was involuntary.
Psychic pain travels faster than physical pain as evidenced by the the immediacy of Susan's grief versus the time it takes for her to start punching holes in walls after she slices a finger fighting with a can of black beans.
Ed note: There were no quality controls for this research.
Anyway, that's what Susan's been up to.

OMG guys, it's been like a whole month since her last post, how much did you miss Susan?
But before we go even one sentence further, don't think that she didn't notice who did and who did not leave her a comment. She noticed. Big thanks to all who reached out and let Susan know she is not floating around in a cold, dark bloggy void. For everyone else, Susan is opting to set aside her disappointment and catch you up on the amazing magical journey of her life!
June was pretty exciting all on its own because, well it's June! But it became so much more wonderful when Susan hired landscapers to do everything she hates to do in her yard. Strangely, dog poop removal and poison ivy eradication don't bother her & will remain under her purview, but every detestable task involving leaves or twigs or grass has been contracted out. Good bye!
A flat tire led to a $1500 bill for Susan's elderly car, which was previously described by her mechanic thusly,
'For such a high end car they're really not well made'.
Susan had a June birthday and despite being dead set against enjoying it, Little Sister forced Susan to be happy, not crappy, for her middle-aged 56th. Then her work friends got their turn to shower Susan with love and attention. Susan is blessed. BLESSED she tells you!
She bankrolled her son's purchase of a used 6 cylinder Toyota, which enabled him to pass his 4 cylinder Toyota along to his sister. Prior to this arrangement she backed it into a cluster of mailboxes denting the trunk & dislodging part of the bumper which the son completely removed for fear that it would fly off on the road and kill someone. It has been through every member of the family and is quite broken in now.
Mid month she look a lovely Friday evening cruise with her family aboard the Lisa Ann:
Please Note: this photo was pinched from Little Sister, the professional selfie taker.
Then Susan's father had a pacemaker implanted which wore out her mother with anxiety. He explained to Susan the procedure of inserting a thin wire into his vein adding he 'I was more worried about them tickling my heart'. After it was all over he ate hospital grade Eggplant Parmesan, went to sleep & got home in time for Father's Day.
In between everything Susan also baked blueberry scones, met her sister for outdoor music on Wednesday nights, commissioned a Giant Jenga from Cousin Greg watched Columbo on Netflix, painted a hand-me-down dresser Flashy Sapphire, made stuffed peppers with orzo, chickpeas, feta & spinach and received a letter from a private investigator.
Home improvement was represented when Susan's son moved downstairs and his former pigsty was transformed into main floor guest accommodations. The daughter was allowed to choose the new color and came up with Florida Sunset. Who can't relax & fall asleep in a bright orange room, right?
The daughter graduated from High School, a happy and exciting event with a lot of speechy stuff from high ranking twelfth graders, none of whom had anything worthwhile to tell Susan about life. She thought of how things have changed since she & the husband sat there together two years ago and despite having a dead father her kids have excelled. Afterward, she commemorated the event by badgering her family to dress properly & show up on time for dinner.
On the final Friday of the month Susan installed a Record Wall at work:
Lastly but not leastly, Susan and her work pals spent a long weekend on Fire Island courtesy of their boss; there was a fake Housewives style fight, changeable sleeping arrangements, very rigid sleeping arrangements, staying out late, Cards Against Humanity, naps, borrowed clothing, long walks into town, bikes, blooming flowers, cooperative cooking & cleaning up, wagons and ferry rides.
CLICK HERE to read about last year's trip.
All in all there was nothing that Susan would be ashamed to admit in front of her children.
Happy Birthday, America!

Susan had dinner with her work pals, here's a sampling of what was discussed:
- How delicious the ceviche was
- Construction of a jailhouse tampon (strictly for emergencies)
- How an airport alarm was set off by the infrastructure of a brassiere
- Can red and white wine be consumed in one sitting without ill effect
- Children, including but not limited to feeding them, carpooling them & the wildcard aspect of soft-footed ones during parental alone time
- Scallops and beet puree, a story of friendship
- The effective use of vegetable oil for post menopausal dryness
- A happily anticipated work trip to Fire Island
- Jolly Ranchers as a marital aid
- Celebrity infatuations (Susan chose Benicio Del Toro)
- And finally, who was going to drive who home

Day One: New Orleans
Susan is spending a few days in New Orleans with her kids.
Her pre-getting-on-an-airplane-anxiety hit critical mass the day she had to pack, complete a few errands & get to her destination on time. The actual flying through the air was uneventful. She shared inflight coping strategies with her nervous armrest infiltrating seatmate who rewarded Susan with her brand new Food Network magazine.
During the ride to the hotel Susan saw palm trees everywhere! She never considered that she may encounter palm trees and it was a nice surprise. She also passed exotic cemeteries filled with above ground crypts, Susan's a sucker for architecture in any form & got woozy with anticipation of getting an up close crack at them. As for architecture, her French Quarter hotel is a real looker all tarted up for Christmas, even the beautiful wood paneling cleverly distracted her from panicking in the claustrophobically sized elevator.
In the interest of expediency and because Susan is tired, here's a partial list of things she saw on her first day in New Orleans:

- A noon seizure
- Gas lights everywhere
- A preponderance of people encouraging Susan and her children to drink alcohol
- Helicopters
- Tarot card & palm readers set up in the street
- Music!
- Raspy voiced black men
- Folks walking around with portable cocktails
- Fancily attired ladies and gentleman, different than New York fancy
By 8pm the neighborhood was insane with drunks, homeless, normal people, little kids, loud music and police sirens moving everybody along. Neither Susan nor her children objected to retiring early.
The end.
The end.
10.25.2015
Earlier last week Susan, her two kids, little sister & brother in law attended a memorial put together by the hospice located on the grounds of The Little Caring Hospital for all of the families whose loved ones had passed through that way.
Wow, that was a long sentence.
Anyway, Susan regularly receives their invitations to bereavement support services and events but this is the first time she has taken them up on anything. The memorial was to be held in the hospital's chapel and she was particularly attracted to the option of being able to share 'memories, a poem or a prayer' meaning she would have a captive audience and a microphone.
Susan thought she might like to read the poem her pal Mikel had sent her, one which helped in the early days, and something she still re-reads. There were one or two points within the poem that she didn't specifically agree with, like 'loving being a matter of eternity more than of time', but the rest of it was pretty on target. Susan's big with sharing things that help her ease the burdens of life, whether inspiring others to see the up-side of grief or to wage a deadly battle against ants in the kitchen with a DIY killer (Borax + honey).
The more she thought about it the more Susan realized that she preferred to use the opportunity to tell people about the husband. This was not going to be an improv situation, she would write everything down. She searched her little toy brain for a good story but came up empty. Her brain has not been particularly strong this last year, which she worries may be the coincidentally timed emergence of dementia, but she set aside that possibility and consulted her alter-memory, the archives of Twisted Susan. Very quickly she found this post then adapted it to her current need.
On the way there Susan was looking forward to being back where the husband was so well cared for, but the daughter was not happy as they walked past the hospice where her father died. She removed her mother's arm from around her shoulder and growled like a little broken hearted cub. Once inside she perked up when she saw her aunt & uncle.
Mercifully it was an Inter-Denominational Celebration of Life and not a Catholic service. The program began with a welcoming blessing & candle lighting then a musical interlude by the most adorable acapella chorus of white haired men ever to belt out a churchy song. After this was the celebration of life part where each person who requested to speak was called up to the altar.
The participants were all sad, a few cried, some went against Susan's personal code by winging it, best was the young girl who read a poem about her grandmother. After taking a long walk up the center aisle with all eyes upon her, she stared straight ahead and very clearly read her poem in front of what were probably 200 people, then took that same brave walk all the way back to her seat. She did a nice job.
Shortly thereafter Susan's name was called.
Sidebar: Susan's son, who was arriving separately, was still not there. (Insert angry mommy Grrrr sound). There will undoubtedly be a meeting with him on this topic later.
Susan and her prepared statement took their place at the front of the room. She looked briefly at the group, announced that she was nervous then in a slightly breaking voice said she's been without her husband for 323 days, that's 44 weeks, and would like to read them a list of things that she liked about him:

- He was impressive with a yo-yo
- Describing the birth of his son he said 'I never knew how exhausting it was to yell at someone for four hours'
- He sang, poorly
- He was very adept at winning arguments, but took it easy on Susan
- He ran around in the yard with the kids and the dog
- He could always be counted on to complete any disagreeable task
- He told funny stories from his youth about drunkenness & neighborhood brawling
- He apologized by saying 'I've decided to forgive you'
- He didn't build himself up by making others feel small
- If he didn't know something, he knew a guy who knew
- He said that being mad at Susan was like being mad at a puppy (got a big Awwww from the crowd)
- He didn't worry about things he couldn't control
- He did the Lindy at weddings & grabbed anyone in his path
- Before he was married to Susan he raised two smart, independent, caring & wonderful girls that have always been terrific big sisters to their two kids
- He would say 'It's better to seek forgiveness than permission'
- 'Thanksgiving is not a low-fat holiday'
- When arguing he'd say 'Don't cloud the issue with facts'
- About making decisions; 'The situation is the boss'
- Upon doing something for him he'd say 'Who's better than you?'
- About money he said a few things; 'I can owe it to you or you can forget about it' Expenses related to mistakes were called the 'stupidity tax' and 'All financial crises only last for 48 hours'
- 'Success is 90% showing up, 9% listening & 1% dumb luck'
- 'Tough times don't last, tough people do'
- Lastly, his favorite was always; 'Analyze, Adapt, Overcome'
The crowd had been chuckling all along but Susan was surprised as hell when everyone applauded, little sister said it wasn't even she who started it.
The husband could still make people laugh.
Susan's son showed up during the Reading of Names; each loved one's name was read as their family members walked up front to hang a sparkly cardboard dove on a tree. Some folks had two entire rows of people in attendance, others only one or two or three. This is where Susan got a good look at how bereaved people were. Many were grim faced. She felt particularly sad for the older folks, grief had really roughed them up.
Let's fast forward to the balance of the night highlights:
Susan's daughter hung their sparkly dove on the highest branch, the old man acapella chorus came back to cheer everyone up, Susan & her family went out for BLTs and milk shakes.
2.22.2015
Susan has concluded an entire week of work during which time she has:
- Developed a cold with green mucous
- Set off a very loud alarm almost every day
- Reacted calmly during a phone call in which she was informed by her son that there was water pouring from the ceiling in the basement
- Removed the slip she was wearing to lend to a coworker
- Saw a BIG bug in the stairwell
- Went out for weeknight cocktails

Susan's daughter lost a wonderful mentor over the weekend. He was her figure drawing teacher, but really much more than that. Susan likes to describe him as the person who pushed her daughter outside of her little artistic prison. Susan's niece, the art school graduate, has studied with him since she was in high school. The loss is terribly sad.
Susan's family is now weathering a very dark storm involving the husband's health. Susan, half pessimist/half optimist is figuring out how to get through each day as best she can. She doesn't know what effect this will have on her twistedsusaning, she just knows that she loves to BLAHg & loves her bloggy pals.
Today Susan made a list to keep her mind occupied, she entitled it A Simple List For A Simple Person and it had things on it like;
Learn the mortgage
Do laundry
Organize nails & tools
Make soup.
She did laundry & made soup. She delivered difficult information to her daughter. She made Ensure smoothies for the husband, massaged his legs, assisted him when he needed her & joked with him. She threw things out & reorganized the bathroom drawers. She fielded phone calls & reached out to friends. Susan's next door neighbors came over in the freezing cold to fix a piece of siding that was torn out by the wind. The day ended when Susan's little sister offered to accompany Susan & the husband next week to learn the outcome of his medical tests. Susan breathed a tremendous sigh of relief and accepted her offer.

Susan has been cycling through her own personal stages of unemployment.
First was (1) Overwhelming Relief followed immediately by
(2) Medical Appointment Scheduling
(3) Work Friend Isolation Syndrome (ongoing)
(4) Big Decision Reconsideration
(5) Pantry Reorganization
and now she is up to (6) Lists.
Susan makes lists whenever she has a need to stabilize herself or has a bunch of stuff to do in a short amount of time. First on Susan's list was her diet.
She's been feeling lethargic lately which is a dangerous condition for someone who is already a low-energy personality so she put together a list of healthier things to eat for breakfast. Susan won't bore you with what they were (shout out to Cousin Lisa) but they're all better options than mixing chocolate chips directly into a jar of peanut butter.
After her breakfast list Susan made a very nice bundt cake with all the blueberries attracting fruit files in her kitchen.
Susan dug out an unused notebook into which she transferred her breakfast list. Then she added her free things to do this summer list which was established well before there was a hint of unemployment in her life. It's a good list because there's always free things for Susan to do involving music or outdoor movies as long as she doesn't mind figuring out where she's going to park.
The next list she's going to tackle is her daily schedule because right now she has none.

Susan had a great Friday.
Susan was sitting on the bleachers watching her son's team wrestle when a woman plopped down next to her and asked if she was Sean's mom.
Susan is indeed Sean's mom.
The woman was Diane, and when she opened her mouth the loveliest compliments about Susan's son came gushing out.
Good kid, polite, respectful. The adjectives every mother longs to hear about her kid. Diane told Susan that her son, Leo is a freshman and Susan's son has been mentoring him.
Diane lost her father a year ago September, he was a wrestler and Leo decided he would join the wrestling team as a way to honor his grandfather. Leo hadn't wrestled before and Susan's son has been wonderful with him, really taking the time to make a difference in his ability and confidence, being kind of a big brother in the process. Diane described the positive effect this has had on the whole family.
Susan has no idea what goes on when her son walks out the front door. She is confident that he always behaves in a way that would make her proud, and periodically this is substantiated by another parent.
Last year her son attended a wrestling tournament out of town and unaccompanied by his father. On the final day of the tournament the son pulled a very stupid stunt, got caught, and the punishment was to coach 'the little kids' every week until he graduated high school.
Leo is one of the little kids.
God bless you, Diane for providing Susan with a much appreciated alternative view of her good natured but somewhat passive-aggressive, reserved and minimally communicative teenager.
- It was payday
- The daughter commented that Susan's hair looked good
- The husband surprised her with a spicy tuna roll
- And a neighborhood mom sought out Susan in the high school gymnasium to praise her son

From,
The most amazing daughter ever,
Lily.
Yay.
Please be aware that the daughter referred to herself as amazing because of the way her mother feels about that wretched song from last week at the mall.

Don't Expect Much
Susan is currently bereft of all inspiration. Her feet hurt. She wasted twenty minutes this morning trying to find the proper necklace for her outfit. Twenty minutes.
Then she got all mad and threw stuff out.
She got her hair cut then went food shopping and bought more goat cheese. She left her notes for the substantive sex talk at work. It's scheduled for the weekend so she'll create an outline from memory.
Her neck gets in the way when she looks down. She wonders why people read a Kindle when they could read a book. She can't even keep up with her pals' blogs.

In honor of Susan's son's fourteenth birthday this weekend here's fourteen things she likes about him:
- He's not mean
- He eats his vegetables
- He doesn't take crap from people
- Often he's cooperative
- He gets right out of bed when his alarm goes off
- He tells the truth much of the time
- His toilet cleaning skills are improving
- He's respectful
- He got into a tussle coming to the aid of a girl
- He's trustworthy within reason
- He's still affectionate, unlike his sister
- He likes to smell good
- He can be funny when he's not just making noise
- He's been the most delightful company since 1996

This new year Susan resolves to;
Care more about world events
Find her silver hoop earring
Make some CDs for the car
Find her black and tan gloves
Try tomato juice again
Be a better person
Watch that Netflix movie she got in November
Think about using the treadmill
Serve antipasto more often
Use her creative abilities to make money
Give the crockpot away
Show her children as much love as she shows the dog.

Right now Susan is thankful for;
Zombieland
food made with sugar
modern plumbing
The Onion
Euphoria by Calvin Klein
that Pearl Jam song
McSorley's Irish Black Lager
her fireplace
supermarkets that stay open late
Dr. Bob
and all her bloggy pals who gave Susan hugs & kisses
Happy Thanksgiving, guys.

22 Things Susan Likes About The Husband
Susan's husband had a birthday the other day, and even though it ended in a zero Susan didn't feel compelled to do anything about it other than make him coffee in the morning and submit to a personal request later on.
Susan isn't much for ceremony, she doesn't require it for herself and she doesn't provide it for others. She's not running out to spend four dollars on a card at the store, so don't wait for one. And, if you've told her more than every single time that you don't like the gift she's chosen for you, she's not giving you any more.
But, after so many years manacled together in wedded bliss, and even though she's got to force him to sit down and read her BLAHg, he still makes her happy.
Here's some reasons why;
- He makes fantastic meatballs
- Describing the birth of his son he said 'I never knew how exhausting it was to yell at someone for four hours'
- He sings
- He is very adept at winning arguments, but takes it easy on Susan
- He runs around in the yard with the kids
- He can be counted on to complete any disagreeable task
- He tells funny stories from his youth about neighborhood brawling
- He apologizes by saying 'I've decided to forgive you'
- He cracks Susan's toes
- He doesn't build himself up by making others feel small
- If he doesn't know something, he knows a guy who knows
- He ingores Susan when she gets all TWISTED and acts like a baby
- He doesn't worry about things he can't control
- He makes Susan's coffee exactly the way she likes it
- He can Lindy
- He liked the same moody 1975 album that Susan did
- He thinks Susan is funny
- He ordered a bushel of clams and didn't know what to do with them so he called up his friend George for suggestions & ended up making fantastic garlicy, steamed clams for Susan's birthday
- He's impressive with a yo-yo
- He sez that being mad at Susan is like being mad at a puppy
- He turns Susan's compost heap every week
- He raised two smart, independent, caring & wonderful girls before he was married to Susan that have always been terrific big sisters.

Blessed? Shut Up.
Blessed is the word that bugs Susan the most and unless Jesus is speaking she doesn't want to hear it.
Other things that bug her are;
modern baby names
the bagels in her neighborhood
TV news
when she breaks a tooth
the price of the NY Times
being interrupted
Drew Barrymore
LOL
wet laundry left in the machine long enough to be washed again
the bastardized American version of any foreign movie
political pontification
small dogs in shopping carts
Frank McCourt's books
To be continued...

What Susan Likes About Her Town
Her NEXT DOOR NEIGHBORS because they're everything that good neighbors should be.
ST. PATRICK'S DAY is celebrated with an enthusiastic parade and subsequently much green spray painted hair.
The HEALTH FOOD STORE because it smells like a health food store and sells candied ginger and all manner of exotic supplies and never costs Susan a lot money.
The LIBRARY because even though Susan still hasn't figgered out how to effectively use the computer system & rarely finds what she wants, she always walks out happy. The library personnel are helpful and nice and never once has Susan needed to reach across the counter & grab anyone by their throats. Most delightfully, there are frequent used book sales and a magazine recycling bin which Susan finds very exciting to poke through.
The SCHOOLS because Susan's children come home smarter than when they left.
The big neon ROCKY POINT DISCOUNT TIRES sign because it's very pretty and the colors alternate except for when it's not working, like lately.
TREES. There's loads of them, who knew Susan would become so smitten with trees? And when they fall over onto cars or fences they get to live a little longer as firewood.
